How the math works
Cost per mile divides by all miles — loaded and deadhead — because the truck burns fuel and wears parts on every one of them. The rate you quote divides by loaded miles only, because those are the only miles anyone pays for. The calculator keeps the two straight and says which one each number uses.
The fuel surcharge counts as pay, not as a discount on your fuel cost — that's how the accounting works, and mixing the two hides money. Percentage fees come out of gross or out of linehaul depending on your agreement, so the calculator asks which — on a target-margin quote the difference compounds, because the fee scales with the revenue you're solving for.
Operating profit here is before your own pay and before tax money — set those aside from profit; they aren't costs of the load.
